Landfill Gas Tools and Services
The following tools and resources are available to LEAs regarding landfill gas issues.
Gas Monitoring Equipment
The principal constituent of interest in monitoring landfill gas is methane. Combustible gas monitoring instruments should be able to detect methane at levels between 0-100% by volume in air while being suitably accurate in the range of 0-5% by volume in air.
Gas monitoring instruments should be appropriately calibrated and maintained in good operating condition.
There are several instruments that CalRecycle currently use to monitor landfill gas:
- Landtech (GEM 2000)
- GSM (GMI Gasurveyor 442R)
- Scott (Scout)
It is very important that the person using the monitoring instrument receive adequate training before using it.

Equipment Loan Program
CalRecycle developed the LEA equipment loan program to support LEA equipment needs. The program is intended to support LEAs whose financial or technical resources limit their ability to obtain and operate instrumentation and other technical and scientific equipment. The equipment loan program is available to all LEAs certified or partially certified by CalRecycle.
The program provides support through:
- Loaning air monitoring instruments and equipment.
- Providing technical support and training assistance for all loaned items.
- Repairing and calibrating of LEA-owned equipment.
Field Staff Health and Safety Program
CalRecycle’s Health and Safety Manual is one component of CalRecycle’s overall Health and Safety Program. The program has been developed to comply with state and federal laws and regulations that protect employees from toxic, hazardous, or infectious materials and physical hazards to which they may be exposed in the work environment.
The Field Health and Safety Program identifies, evaluates, and controls field health and safety hazards to protect CalRecycle employees and, as appropriate, addresses site analysis, engineering controls, exposure limits, and waste-handling procedures for fieldwork.
The procedures are intended for field staff to provide health and safety guidance when performing field activities. Appendix 2 includes information on training required or recommended for, and the instrumentation to be taken into the field by, different field staff designations (referred to as tier 0, tier 1, or tier 2).
