Reusable or Refillable Propane Cylinders Act
SB 1280
On February 15, 2025, Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 1280 (Laird, 2024) into law to prohibit the sale of single-use propane cylinders by January 1, 2028.
Every year, Californians buy millions of single‑use propane cylinders. Many are improperly disposed of because convenient recycling options are limited.

Placing propane cylinders in the trash is dangerous. Even when they seem empty, they can still contain flammable gas that can cause explosions or fires and pose a safety risk.
By January 1, 2028, SB 1280 prohibits the sale or offer for sale of propane cylinders, as defined by law, except those that are reusable or refillable.
