Ordinances and Policies for Local Jurisdictions

On June 14, 2005, the California Integrated Waste Management Board (now CalRecycle) adopted the Large Venues and Events Waste Reduction Model Ordinance and Model General Plan Language. Development of these model documents is required by Public Resources Code (PRC), Section 42648.1 (a) and (b).

Although not required by State law, the voluntary adoption by local governments of a waste reduction ordinance or policy for all local venues and events would further reinforce the development of waste reduction and recycling programs. The CalRecycle-adopted documents are a good starting point for local governments that wish to develop an ordinance or pass general plan language relating to venues and events waste diversion.

A slide presentation that briefly outlines the requirements of PRC 42648, et al (AB 2176, Montanez, Chapter 879, Statutes of 2004) and the provisions of CalRecycle’s model ordinance and general plan language is available.

On April 20, 2005, CalRecycle hosted a public meeting to hear comments on the model voluntary local ordinance on waste reduction at venues and events.
