California is faced with the challenge of managing millions of tons of postconsumer paper generated annually in the state. In 2014, about 4 milllion tons of paper were landfilled in California, according to CalRecycle’s 2014 Statewide Waste Characterization Study. A majority of this material has the potential to be recycled.
Because California’s generation of paper continues to increase, recycling alone will not necessarily reduce the amount of paper sent to landfills. All sectors of society–manufacturers, businesses, government organizations, and private residents–must also reduce the amounts of paper we use. Reducing our consumption of paper not only benefits the environment, but often improves a business’ bottom line and operating efficiency. Private residents, too, can benefit economically by reducing paper use.
