CalRecycle Websites

  • Business Home. The business site provides information on how your business can reduce waste.
  • Climate Change. The California Air Resources Board (ARB) AB 32 Scoping Plan identifies CalRecycle as lead in developing recycling-based solutions aimed at reducing greenhouse gases.
  • Construction and Demolition Recycling. Includes fact sheets, case studies, technical manuals, methods, and a Construction and Demolition Informational Guide.
  • Data Central. Data Central is a portal that provides quick access to a variety of CalRecycle and other data sources and tools relating to California’s solid waste stream, waste disposal and recycling facility infrastructure, materials flow, recycling, and much more.
  • Diversion Study Guide. Knowing local businesses’ diversion efforts can help communities identify recycling opportunities in the commercial waste stream, improve their diversion performance, and increase the accuracy of their reports.  The Diversion Study Guide gives step-by-step guidance on the hows and whys of performing your own analysis of the commercial waste stream.
  • Food Discard Diversion. Food waste makes up 14 percent of the waste stream statewide. This site offers suggestions on programs to reduce food waste, and features links to groups distributing food to individuals and other organizations.
  • Grants and Loans. CalRecycle offers grants and loans to local government for a variety of purposes, including waste tires, farm and ranch cleanups, used oil and household hazardous waste.
  • Health Care Industry Waste Reduction and Recycling. CalRecycle’s health care waste reduction and recycling grogram assists health care facilities in the development of cost-effective measures to reduce, reuse, recycle and buy recycled.
  • InfoCycling. From 1999 to 2007, this newsletter provided time and cost-reducing tools to assist local government, state agencies and large state facilities) in evaluating their current diversion performance and reaching diversion goals.   • LEA Central. A comprehensive site for local enforcement agencies (LEA) that have the primary responsibility for ensuring correct operation and closure of solid waste facilities in the state, as well as safe transportation of solid waste.
  • Local Government Library. CalRecycle’s local government reference library assists California jurisdictions with Integrated Waste Management Act compliance. There are links to CalRecycle policies, publications (including assistance documents and newsletters) as well as to sample/model documents (policies, ordinances, etc.) submitted to CalRecycle by local jurisdictions to share information.
  • Local Assistance Staff Contacts. Local assistance staff serves as a liaison between local governments and CalRecycle, and helps channel input for the development of CalRecycle policies concerning local planning and implementation issues.
  • Organic Materials Management: A comprehensive site covering everything from backyard composting to highway mulch demonstration projects.
  • Recycling Market Development Zone Loans and Assistance (RMDZ). The RMDZ is a CalRecycle program to create markets for recycled non-hazardous materials. However, assistance for businesses extends beyond State loans to include help and incentives provided by local zones, through their Zone Administrators (ZAs) and economic developers, as well as CalRecycle Zone Liaisons.
  • Reuse Assistance Grants. The Reuse Assistance Grants Program is a competitive grant program and provides incentives for local public agencies to promote and apply the concept of reuse in their business communities.
  • Used Oil/Household Hazardous Waste Programs. Includes grant information, publications, events, forms, downloadable graphics, etc.
  • Venue Facilities and Special Events. Learn how to reduce waste and increase recycling at stadiums, parks, convention centers, museums, and events such as fun runs, or community food festivals. Includes downloadable model policies, fact sheets, case studies, resource links and other useful information.

  • Battery Recycling. Federal, state and local municipalities are all using recycling services from Battery Solutions. Our SmartRecycle System is an easy to implement recycling program that makes collection, shipping and recycling convenient while providing the environmental compliance you need.
  • Best of the Web (BOTW). Waste Management and Recycling. This site is a helpful resource for researching sustainable waste management on the Internet.
  • Earth 911 information System. CalRecycle is working with the private sector, the California EPA, and the other states to provide citizens an environmental information system that can be customized for each community. The system, which operates through a state-of-the-art, computerized, interactive phone system and over the Internet, provides a single source of community-specific environmental and recycling information.
    By dialing 1-800-CLEAN-UP or visiting www.1800CLEANUP.org and entering their five-digit ZIP code, callers can find information under the following categories, among others:

  • Indian Country Waste Management. A complete U.S. EPA website that details the waste management practices in Indian Country. The site includes information on municipal solid waste, hazardous, construction and demolition, industrial, mining and military munitions waste.
  • Managing and Transforming Waste Streams Tool. Created by the U.S. EPA, features 100 strategies local governments can employ to reduce waste and recover materials on a path towards zero waste. The strategies span across waste generating sectors and capture opportunities to adopt or expand policies, programs, requirements, incentives, facilities development, and outreach initiatives. By using interactive functions (sorting, searching, or filtering), local planners can produce a list of strategies tailored to their community’s needs and capabilities.
  • Recycle Across America. Recycle Across America is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that sells standardized recycling labels that can be used for a variety of uses to avoid confusion about what materials go in which bin. These labels can be used by local jurisdictions, residents, businesses, schools, etc. The website includes tips on how to “recycle right” and other helpful information.
