Note: This page contains historical data from CalRecycle’s statewide goal measurement prior to 2007 that estimated a diversion percentage. For 2007 and subsequent years, CalRecycle compares reported disposal tons to population to calculate per capita disposal expressed in pounds/person/day. This new goal measurement system is described in CalRecycle’s Goal Measurement: 2007 and Later web page.
|Year||Estimated Statewide Diversion|
|Estimated Statewide Generation|
(% of generation)
*The Board's Taxable Sales Deflator Index (TSDI) was used to remove inflation from taxable sales amounts used in statewide diversion rate estimates for 2005 and 2006. A preliminary TSDI is used for the statewide diversion rate. Prior to 2005, Consumer Price Index (CPI) was used. In 2004, the State Board of Equalization stated that its taxable sales deflator is a more accurate measure of inflation in taxable sale amounts. Because of this change in methodology, the statewide generation and diversion rate estimates for 2005 and 2006 are not directly comparable with prior year estimates.
**Per Chapter 993, Statutes of 2002 (Chavez, AB 2308), 2001-2005 disposal figures do not include waste sent to three Integrated Waste Management Board-permitted inert mine-reclamation facilities in Southern California. Starting in 2006, disposal does not include waste sent to two of these facilities. This represents approximately 2 percentage points of diversion. Reported Statewide Disposal includes Total Landfilled in State, Transformation and Total Exported tons reported at the time. Please see CalRecycle's Disposal Reporting System (DRS) for the most current tonnage data.
***Estimated generation may not add up to the sum of estimated diversion and reported disposal due to rounding.
