General Program Information

  • Case Studies. This section of CalRecycle’s website pulls together case studies from across the site that jurisdictions or local government officials may use to learn about successful diversion programs
  • Diversion Program System. This database contains information on the types of programs implemented by local governments to reduce waste creation, divert waste away from landfills, and prevent disposal of household hazardous waste (HHW).
  • Earth’s 911 Information System. CalRecycle is partnering with the private sector, the California EPA, and the other states to provide citizens an environmental information system that can be customized for each community. By dialing 1-800-CLEAN-UP or visiting www.1800Cleanup.org and entering their five-digit ZIP code, callers can find key information.
  • Innovations: Analyses of Successful Local Programs. These studies were developed from the videoconference (see below) to highlight local government successes and model programs in reuse, recycling, composting and other waste reduction programs.

Specific Program Topics

  • Commercial Recycling. In an effort to encourage expansion in commercial recycling programs and in partnership with CalRecycle, the Institute for Local Government has developed a variety of tools help jurisdictions and businesses develop their commercial recycling programs.
  • Construction and Demolition Diversion. Information provides information to jurisdictions and general contractors on methods and activities to divert construction and demolition (C&D) materials. It also includes examples of C&D ordinances currently being implemented around the state.
  • Disaster Guidelines. These guidelines were prepared to assist jurisdictions in preparing for and dealing with disaster waste. Jurisdictions may submit information in their annual report requesting the reporting year tons be modified so they do not get penalized for disaster waste.
  • Food makes up as much as 14 percent of the disposed waste stream. Find out about programs, partnership opportunities and other ways to reduce the amount of food going to the landfill.
  • Innovations Videoconference. The videoconference highlighted local government successes and model programs in reuse, recycling and composting.
  • Organics. CalRecycle’s information to help to increase the diversion of organic materials from landfill disposal for beneficial uses such as compost and energy production.
  • Rural Jurisdictions and Information. The CalRecycle has developed a new home for information and ideas directed toward a rural city, county, or regional agency. These pages provide information about rural assistance, successful diversion programs, and grants and loans available to rural jurisdictions.
  • Single-Stream Recycling Collection Workshop. The California Integrated Waste Management Board held a “Single-Stream Collection of Recyclables” workshop to discuss the designing, implementing, monitoring, and promoting of single-stream recycling collection.
  • School District Waste Reduction. Learn about strategies that can be implemented School districts to reduce the amount of solid waste generated and to save resources and money in all areas of a school district. Students can also assist in hands-on diversion learning experiences.

This site includes sample publications, news articles, and clip art; consumer and business education materials; info on media campaigns, training, and workshops; and an information clearinghouse with materials from other local governments in California.
  • State Agency Recycling Recognition (STARR) Awards program. This site includes short case studies of past award winners. Now that the goal year of 2004 has passed, the Integrated Waste Management Board no longer presents the STARR awards to recognize progress toward the 50% waste diversion goal. We continue to share tools, tips, and resources for State agency waste reduction our State agency web page.
  • Trash Cutter Awards. This award program was created to recognize the wide range of successful waste reduction and recycling programs implemented by local jurisdictions. The site includes case studies of the winning programs from 1998 through 2001. Having achieved the 50 percent statewide diversion goal, the Integrated Waste Management Board is focusing on other ways to recognize jurisdictions for their waste reduction achievements and is no longer offering the Trash Cutter awards.
