California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle)

Program Responsibilities

Public Affairs

The Office of Public Affairs (OPA) is the voice of CalRecycle, promoting the department’s programs and vision through strategic marketing and communications, media relations, public outreach, and education.

CalRecycle works to inspire and challenge Californians to achieve the highest waste reduction, recycling, and reuse goals in the nation; OPA works to further these goals by increasing public understanding of waste management and recycling programs, and suggesting appropriate steps to increase that awareness. OPA accomplishes these objectives through a number of ongoing activities and initiatives.

OPA includes the Office of Education and the Environment, which is responsible for implementing the Education and Environment Initiative (EEI). California's landmark EEI Curriculum comprises 85 units teaching select Science and History-Social Science academic standards, and is a national model designed to help prepare today's students to become future scientists, economists, and green technology leaders.

OPA also monitors the department’s Ombudsman program, which provides conflict resolution assistance related to CalRecycle programs.
